Join Us Oct 2017 – Nya Mosaic Blanket

Time & Place

Sunday, Oct 29, 2017, 12:30-3:30pm – new time & format
Social time and show & tell from 12:30-1:30pm at Panera, Mass Ave., Lexington, MA
Business News & Program from 1:30-3:30pm
Cary Memorial Library, Lexington, MA

New Meeting Format – 12:30-1:30pm Social Time before the Program

The new meeting format worked well in September and we’re continuing with that format for October. We’ll be meeting an hour early at Panera down the street (walking distance) from the library. This will give us a chance to socialize and look at each other’s projects without cutting into our meeting and program time. It’s not mandatory to come to both parts of the meeting. It will be great to see you however you choose to participate.

Program – Nya Mosaic Blanket – 1:30-3:30pm at the Library

We’ll be meeting from 1:30-3:30pm as we usually do at Cary Memorial Library in Lexington, MA.

We’re kicking off our Year of Colorwork! Karen has challenged us to swatch some mosaic crochet and bring in questions/insights to share. The pattern Karen suggests swatching is “Nya Mosaic Blanket” by Tatsiana Kupryianchyk, better known as Lilla Bjorn. There is a free version of the pattern with photo tutorials on her blog. Mary has some suggestions on the yahoo group on various ways to do the colorwork.

If you haven’t already picked up a hook, there’s still time! What if you don’t have time to swatch? Come anyway! Learn from the discussion and/or contribute from past experience.

Please bring:
  • Your swatch from the Nya Mosaic Blanket (optional)
  • Thoughts/questions that popped up while working on the swatch (or other mosaic crochet)

New Meeting Format – 12:30-1:30pm Social Time before the Program

We’re trying a new meeting format this month. We’ll be meeting an hour early at Panera down the street (walking distance) from the library. This will give us a chance to socialize and look at each other’s projects without cutting into our meeting and program time. It’s not mandatory to come to both parts of the meeting but we’re looking forward to trying out this idea. It will be great to see you!

Program – Mosaic Crochet – 1:30-3:30pm at the Library

We’ll be meeting from 1:30-3:30pm as we usually do at Cary Memorial Library in Lexington, MA. If you can’t come to the social portion or go into auto pilot that day, this part is not changing! We’ll be in the same place as usual for the business news and program portion of the meeting.

Karen will be presenting on Mosaic Crochet. Mosaic crochet is a method of using multiple colors to make intricate patterns. Even though it looks like the colors are changed mid-row, the technique uses long stitches which only require color changes at the end of the row. The result is a thicker fabricExamples of mosaic crochet from google image search. The possibilities for intricate designs are endless.

Join us Aug 2017 – Warm Up America Squares & Chain Link Recap

Time & Place

Sunday, Aug 27, 2017, 1:30-3:30
Fabric Place Basement, Natick, MA

Program – Warm Up America Squares & CGOA Chain Link Conference Recap

Warm Up America Challenge

The CGOA’s Warm Up America Challenge is complete! While we didn’t win the prize for the most blocks made, we did help CGOA make an impressive number of blocks for charity.

It is time for us to assemble the blocks we made for the Challenge. We’ve selected HugCrafters as our charity and will be assembling blankets for Spaulding Rehab. We will be making lapghans for folks in wheel chairs.

HugCrafters’ guideline is to make wool-free blankets that are approximately 3′ x 4′. Square is OK, but this rectangular size is more practical. 20 of our WUA blocks will make a 3′ square blanket, 25 blocks will make a 3′ x 4′ blanket.

Mary will bring the blocks we’ve been collecting so anyone who wants to help assemble blankets can pick thru and choose their colors. She will also bring some black acrylic yarn to share for assembly. If you have made any additional blocks, or have acrylic yarn of any color you’d like to donate to the project, please bring to the meeting.

CGOA Chain Link Conference Recap

Karen, Mary, Barbara, and Melissa went to the CGOA Chain Link conference this year in Illinois. Karen, Mary, and Melissa will be on hand to share some tidbits and exciting news from our travels. We came home with lots of ideas to help grow our membership and make our meetings more fun and interesting, but we’ll need everyone’s help to choose and implement these ideas.

Please Bring (optional)

  • Additional crocheted blocks, if you have them.
  • If you’d like, any color of acrylic yarn you’d like to donate to the project. This yarn will be used for joining, boarders, or filling in additional blocks to make complete blankets.
  • Any other completed charity items you’ve been working on.

Join Us Mar 2017 – Free Form Crochet

Time & Place

Sunday, Mar 26, 2017, 1:30-3:30
Cary Memorial Library, Lexington, MA

Program – Free Form Crochet

Introduction to Freeform Crochet with Diane

Oh my gosh, look at that coat! It’s crocheted but not in the usual straight pattern. Colors and shapes go in circles and up and down. It’s exciting (or annoyingly unfathomable.) But you gotta know how they do it.

At Introduction to Freeform Crochet this Sunday you’ll see my Pinterest pages of freeform clothing and artwork, and at least three ways to put motifs (“scrumbles”) together. Then we’ll try a few techniques of freeform ourselves. Bring any yarn, sport to worsted weight is best, in several colors, plus an assortment of hook sizes. Add a few shiny or loopy texture yarns if you wish.

Homework

Optional: get a head start by making one or more circles or ovals about 4″ wide — to be added to in class. Be prepared for fun!
