Join Us June 2017 – Craftworks Summer Party

Program – Craftworks Summer Party Demos

We will be participating in Craftworks’ “Beginning of Summer Party”.

We will be demonstrating various crochet stitches and techniques, sharing some FOs (Finished Objects) and UFOs (Unfinished Objects), and answering questions visitors might have about our local group as well as the CGOA. We will also be collecting rectangles for Warm Up America, as part of the 2017 CGOA Chapter Challenge, so if you have any you would like to share, please bring ’em along! (Or plan to crochet one during the event.)

Craftworks has invited a number of vendors to the event, including highlighted participant String Theory, an independent hand dyer. Craftworks has promised a fun day of drawings, testing, camaraderie and food.

Introduction to Freeform Crochet with Diane

Oh my gosh, look at that coat! It’s crocheted but not in the usual straight pattern. Colors and shapes go in circles and up and down. It’s exciting (or annoyingly unfathomable.) But you gotta know how they do it.

At Introduction to Freeform Crochet this Sunday you’ll see my Pinterest pages of freeform clothing and artwork, and at least three ways to put motifs (“scrumbles”) together. Then we’ll try a few techniques of freeform ourselves. Bring any yarn, sport to worsted weight is best, in several colors, plus an assortment of hook sizes. Add a few shiny or loopy texture yarns if you wish.

Homework

Optional: get a head start by making one or more circles or ovals about 4″ wide — to be added to in class. Be prepared for fun!

Program: One Skein Challenge Show & Tell

In May, Karen challenged us to work up some one-skein projects over the summer, and this is your chance to show off your handiwork. Strut your stuff, show off your fancy yarns, share with us a new stitch or technique you learned, tell us what inspired your color choices. We will “oo” and “ah” and have a good time — maybe even learn a thing or two!

Program: Hyperbolic Crochet & Coral Reef Art

On display in the shop will be some of the pieces from Zaza’s “Coral Reef”. We will be hearing some of the story behind this art display, it’s previous installation, and a bit of the story behind the worldwide Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project.

We will also explore hyperbolic crochet and try some techniques ourselves. Barbara will bring her “Brain Hat” and Mary will bring her “Brain Coral Flower” for inspiration. There will also be links to other patterns that have been used in the Coral Reef Project.

July 2016 Meeting Agenda – Japanese Crochet

Program: How To Read Japanese Charted Crochet Patterns

Karen will recap the presentation she did for us two summers ago, where she introduced us to basic chart reading, as well as how to interpret all the pieces and put them together into a garment.

Time permitting, she will also share more details on reading these patterns, including:

  • a glossary of additional Japanese characters and their meanings as they relate to crochet
  • how to adjust sizing for a perfect fit

Program: Round Robin Tips Tricks

Karen and Mary will start with some tips on knotless chains, foundation stitches (a.k.a. chainless foundations), standing stitches, alternative first stitches (doing away with turning chains), invisible join (to end a round without a slip stitch and knot), Russian join (apricot join too), and… What else might folks have to share? If you have a tip or technique you use to make your work faster, easier, or look more professional, this is the time to share!
